This Environmental Engineer position is responsible for providing technical input into environmental management of Tasiast facilities including waste management, tailings, dump leach, waste rock, and processing facilities. This position will be also responsible for providing input and coordination of compliance with the International Cyanide Management Code. This position reports to the Environment Superintendent.
Job Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities
- Provide technical input to the operational teams on the environmental aspects of their activities.
- Perform routine inspections of tailings, waste rock, dump leach, and processing facilities.
- Collect and analyze environmental data from operational facilities.
- In coordination with operational departments and the Engineer of Record, evaluate and report on the performance of the site tailings facilities against key performance indicators.
- Maintain and ensure monitoring of the geological materials characterization plan.

- Establish scopes of work for external technical consultants and oversee the project execution.
- Maintain and routinely update the Tasiast stormwater management plan.
- Become the subject matter expert on the International Cyanide Management Code and ensure ongoing compliance.
- Conduct waste audits and identify actions to improve waste management practices.
- Support the environment specialists and technicians as required with environment monitoring.
General Responsibilities
- Comply with all Tasiast Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements, policy commitments, Kinross Corporate standards, and legal and other obligations
- Actively participate in training of fellow employees in environmental management practices and other environmental requirements as necessary
- Promote excellence in environmental management and ensure that employees are held accountable for maintaining high environmental standards as required by the Environmental Policy.
- Develop and review management plans, standard operating procedures, monitoring reports and other environmental management activities as required.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all Tasiast safety procedures, including Cardinal Rules, and report any safety concerns to the Environment Lead or Superintendent.
- Conduct hazard identification and risk assessment; including Take 5, Job Safety Analysis (JSA) prior to undertaking work.
Minimum Qualifications & Skill Requirements
Technical Knowledge and Skills Required
- Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and solve problems.
- Experience with the design, construction, and maintenance of the civil projects.
- Knowledgeable of Mauritanian environmental legislation and government departments related to environment activities.
- Must have basic knowledge and understanding of mining and environmental interactions.
- Proficiency with relevant supporting technical software including ArcGIS and CAD software

- Strong organizational and communication skills, strong leadership, team building, and interpersonal skills, and technical writing skills
- Strong computer skills to utilize standard Microsoft Office software package
- Ability to explain environmental monitoring procedures and purposes in clear concise manner
- Well-developed problem solving and organizational skills, and attention to detail
- Ability to manage own workload and prioritize tasks according to company needs
Minimum Qualification and Skills Required
- MAITRISE (BAC +4) or Master (Bac +5) in Environmental Engineering
- 6+ years’ experience conducting environmental or civil engineering
- Excellent ability to speak, read and write French and Arabic
- Good ability to speak, read and write English
- Analytical mindset and good problem-solving skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
